Fiber Optic Sensing for Subsea Pipeline Monitoring
Subsea pipelines can extend across long distances through remote and difficult-to-access environments where leaks, changing operating conditions, seabed movement and external interference can present significant operational, environmental and financial risks. Conventional instrumentation provides valuable information at individual measurement points but may provide limited visibility of developing conditions between those locations.
HAWK's Praetorian Fiber Optic Sensing System transforms optical fiber installed along or associated with the pipeline into a continuous distributed sensing system. Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Praetorian provides real-time acoustic, vibration and temperature information along the monitored route, helping operators identify abnormal conditions, locate developing events and respond more effectively.
Principle of Operation
Praetorian transmits laser pulses through an optical fiber and analyses changes in the returned backscattered light along its length. Acoustic activity, vibration, strain and temperature changes affecting the fiber generate measurable optical signals that can be detected and precisely localised by the system.
For subsea pipeline applications, Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) continuously monitors acoustic and vibration activity associated with events such as pipeline leaks, PIG movement, vessel activity and physical interference. Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) provides a continuous thermal profile along the monitored fiber, enabling identification of abnormal temperature conditions and changes associated with pipeline operation and flow conditions.
Together, DAS and DTS transform the optical fiber into a continuous pipeline monitoring system, providing distributed coverage without requiring individual electronic sensors or subsea electrical power at measurement points along the monitored route.
