Conveyor Belt Idler Condition Monitoring System Using Fiber Optic Sensing
HAWK's Praetorian conveyor belt idler condition monitoring system (CHMS) is a site-wide solution for continuous conveyor idler monitoring that detects when critical parts of the idler are beginning to fail up to 20 days before breakdown. The early detection warnings allow operators to implement conveyor predictive maintenance strategies, control downtime and avoid catastrophic, costly, unplanned shutdowns. The Praetorian Fiber Optic Sensing conveyor monitor system detects abnormalities in conveyor idler performance that other technologies cannot.
How the Fiber Optic Conveyor Belt Idler Monitoring System Works
The Praetorian system Interrogator unit is connected to one end of a fiber optic cable attached to the conveyor belt static structure. The Interrogator produces rapidly pulsed laser light set at a precise frequency that excites the fiber and causes it to be responsive to physical changes around it. Some of this light is reflected (backscattered) to the light source, where the interrogator records and analyses it, looking for changes to its physical effects in the application.
This continuous, passive monitoring approach enables real-time conveyor belt idler vibration monitoring, temperature detection, and strain analysis across the full length of the conveyor, delivering a complete picture of belt and idler health without requiring additional in-field power or communications infrastructure.
From Reactive to Proactive: Conveyor Belt Idler Predictive Maintenance
Traditional conveyor maintenance relies on scheduled manual inspections or reactive repair after failure, an approach that leads to costly unplanned downtime and safety risks. HAWK's Praetorian CHMS transforms conveyor belt idler maintenance into a data-driven, predictive process.
By continuously monitoring idler vibration, temperature, and acoustic signatures along the full belt length, the system identifies failing components days or weeks before a critical breakdown occurs. Operators receive real-time alerts pinpointing the exact location of the fault, enabling targeted, planned maintenance instead of emergency shutdowns.
Field results have demonstrated ROI windows as short as nine days on major overland belt installations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fiber Optic Conveyor Belt Idler Monitoring
A conveyor belt idler condition monitoring system continuously tracks the health and performance of conveyor components — such as idlers, rollers, and the belt itself — in real time. Rather than relying on scheduled manual inspections, it provides ongoing data to identify developing faults before they cause unplanned downtime.
A fiber optic cable is installed along the conveyor's static structure. An interrogator unit sends pulsed laser light through the fiber, which responds to physical changes — such as vibration, temperature, and strain — occurring around it. The reflected light is analyzed to pinpoint abnormalities in idler and belt performance.
The system is designed to detect abnormalities in conveyor idler performance — including bearing wear, roller failure, and other developing mechanical issues — that traditional inspection methods often cannot identify until failure has already occurred.
Yes. The Praetorian CHMS is designed as a site-wide single solution, making it suitable for large and complex conveyor environments across a range of industries including mining, bulk handling, and minerals processing.
